Believing that his opportunities for studying art were limited in American, in 1876 Dwight and Alice Tryon set sail for Europe, where they settled in the Latin Quarter of Paris. He enrolled in the atelier of Jacquesson de la Chevreuse, who had himself been a student of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. There Tryon drew from antique sculpture and later from the life model. At one time Tryon had considered a medical career. This drawing, done several months after he arrived in Paris, reveals his understanding of human anatomy.
