Description:
Framed needlework piece embroidered in wool primarily in red, green, orange, yellow, and blue on with fustian weave, linen and cotton ground, which has the initials "I B" and and smiling sun flanked with the numbers "17" and "04." This piece, which was originally the face of a work bag, has the figures of Adam and Eve (both long-haired nudes with a blue Eve and a pink Adam) with an apple standing in a stylized bower from which two encircling branches sprout roses, pomegranates, acorns, cherries, tulips, carnations, honeysuckle, grapes, and thistle and meet over a jewelled crown. The pair is flanked by an archer on the left and the Archangel Michael who has a wig with a modified "fontage (tall lace headpiece worn by men and women in the last two decades of the 17th century), wings, and sword, and animals including leaping dogs, squirrel, butterflies, birds, snail. It is possibly French because of the large fleur-de-lis at the end of one branch; however, Titi Halle of "Cora Ginsburg" identifies it as English (during a meeting on October 9, 2009).
