An overgrown wood surrounds an armless, headless sculpture reminiscent of the Venus de Milo. Plants entangle the smooth, pristine figure, lending a primitive quality to the classical sculpture. The embedding of the statue--an artificial creation of civilization--within wilderness reflects Pederson-Krag's principle of unity in composition, and her favored theme of harmony between humanity and nature. The serenely still scene appears precariously balanced between an implied human presence and desolation.
The artist establishes a convincing sense of volume in the monochromic image by ordering the space: haphazard branches crowd in the foreground; more orderly trees flank the sculpture; and an intentionally hazy layer of woods fill the background.
