Attie combines two written stories with details copied from Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres’s paintings Odalisque with Slave (1839) and Turkish Bath (1862). Subtly, Attie exposes the violence of Orientalism, a genre of painting and literature developed in the context of imperial projects that imagined peoples from the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Asia as “exotic Others.” Setting and reorienting these images from the past in a grid, she exaggerates the iconic hip and back of Ingres’s Odalisque and cuts the turban off the European musician’s head. Caught out, the voyeur meets the eye of the newly centered woman of color.
