Several versions of this unidentified story have survived among which this painting appears to be the earliest; a religious teacher or a holy man in the costume of a mystic order (perhaps the Naqshbandi order) holds a metal candlestick with four flames; three women from the "zenana" (a women's quarter) step out of the gate; the one extending the plate of fruits appears to be of royal status as the Rajastani inscription in the lower margin also indicates; although not fully legible, the inscription refers to one of the daughters of the emperor Aurangzeb (reigned 1658-1707); night scenes such as this offered the Mughal painters an opportunity to exercise their skills in depicting the effects of light as learned from the European style of painting.
