Rivera brings the desert to life in this sensuous scene of animated rocks and Mexican fan palms near Taxco, Mexico. The dead tree resembles a woman’s neck slung back, and the fan palm on the bottom looks as much like a bird as a sedentary plant. Tecalpexco is missing a horizon and a sky, common elements of landscape that suggest scale and time of day. By avoiding “clock time,” we are left with the time of the earth—its deep rock traces, rooted trees, and palms that might grow for five hundred years.
