"It's the nature of the place to generate such people as Lee Roy Momeyer. Lee Roy was a natural....In three or four minutes, the motor idling, he could tune up a dual-carburetor system, but he didn't have the faintest idea how a carburetor worked. By ear he did it. All he got was a headache from the charts in the books....There were all sorts of hot rods, but only Lee Roy had one with the chrome-plated mufflers up along the windshield, a little hot in the summer, but in the winter they melted the snow and ice....All Lee Roy had to do when he needed an oil change was to tell some sap his own oil was dirty; he put nothing but the best drained oil into his own car. Down in the pit nobody pushed Lee Roy around....He couldn't explain it. It just came natural to him and he played it by ear."
