Description:
Mourning picture done in watercolors primarily in green and browns with the inscription "Sacred / to / Friendship / and the Memory of / departed hours" in black ink; over a scene of a graveyard with a young woman prostrate against a tomb, other people in the area, weeping willow and a church in the left background; over the inscription, "The friends of my youth, where are they? / An echo answers, -where are they?" and signed in ink on the bottom left, "Uncle Horace Montague's." Horace Montague (1801-1834) was the son of Ebenezer Montague (1768-1809) and Jerusha Amsden (1773-1819) who married in 1793, and the brother of Jerusha Montague (1797-1835) who married Justus Smith (1790-1846) of Ashfield in 1820. Whereas vignettes such as this are traditionally ascribed to young women, it is possible that Horace created this work, or perhaps collaborated with a sibling such as his older sister, Jerusha, by executing the calligraphic lettering.
