Description:
Teacup and Saucer, Caughley Factory (1775-1799), Broseley, Shropshire, England, c. 1776-1790. Saucer has the “Bell Toy” pattern. Teacup has the "Mother and Child" pattern. Soft-paste porcelain transfer printed in underglaze cobalt blue. Circular saucer with applied footrim, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue transfer print. Chinoiserie design of a mother and child with a bell toy, behind the mother is a large massing of vases and pots, the child holds a toy with bells, and on the left side is a large baluster vase with flowers, the cup is a shallow bowl, with an applied footrim, and has the "Mother and Child" pattern. This pattern is found on teawares (but not tea cups), mugs, inkwells, and pounce pots, this pattern. A documentary mug in the Victoria and Albert Museum with the Bell Toy pattern on both sides bears the inscription "R. Parr 1776" The Worcester Porcelain Factory also used this pattern.
