Description:
A pair of steel dies from which Washington Commemorative Medals were struck in the 1860s. The obverse die displays a profile bust of Washington and carries the inscription: "Georgius Washington Pres. Prim. Rer. Conf. Amer. MDCCLXXXIX." This die was used in concert with three different reverse dies to strike Lovett medals including The Fideli Certa Merces medal, The Japanese Embassy medal, and a medal for the Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Centennial Celebration. The reverse die displays a seated Liberty with outstretched hand and carries the inscriptions: "Natus Feb. XXII. MDCCXXXII. Obiit Dec. XIV. MDCCXCIX. Fideli Certa Merces MDCCCLX." This die was the reverse for The Fideli Certa Merces medal. Diam.: 2"
