In contrast to the traditional training system where architectural drawings preceded the creation of models, the VkHUTEMAS students were encouraged to work in the opposite order and turn to drawing only after working with a three-dimensional form. When an abstract exercise was complete, it was followed by a production exercise which brought the form into direct connection with reality, similar to this model by Ivan Lamtsov that appears to be a plan for a residential area.
Professors often gave students assignments related to current architectural competitions and involved them in real projects. In 1927, a VKhUTEMAS student Nikolai Travin designed the general plan for one of the most well-known Soviet architectural complexes of the time, the Khavsko-Shabolovsky residential block in Moscow. Both Lamtsov and Travin were part of the ASNOVA Brigade (“Association of New Architects”), an organization founded by Rationalists. At first led by Nikolai Ladovsky, ASNOVA was composed mainly of his students, but also had a renowned independent architect Konstantin Melnikov and the artist El Lissitzky in its ranks.
