"Captain John Pennoyer," of Sharon, Massachusetts, Charlestown, Massachusetts. Pennoyer is listed with the rank of second lieutenant and he served from April to November of 1775 and then again from January 1 to December 31, 1776. He is not listed after that date. The word SETLER, a phoetic spelling of sutler, adds another mysterious aspect to Pennoyer's identity. The Roman numeral XIII, with a hand pointing to a map of the area is another inexplicable aspect of the horn. The vignettes of "old" and "new" Boston and Charlestown are enlivened by sketches of horses heads and necks to ilustrate Charlestown Neck.The map of the camp is filled with animated birds and animals that represent rivers, roads, and other features of the landscape. This is the only known horn with such an elaborate metaphor. The quality of the engraving here is good but not exceptional. The graphics are superb, however, and represent the unusual imaginative efforts that went into horns of this period.
