Label Text: Artist's statement: “As a young photographer, I was utterly committed to working exclusively in black and white, viewing color as crass and commercial—not where the true heart of photography lay. In the late 1970’s, however, after four years of photographing in the Caribbean and along the U.S.-Mexico Border, I realized that something was missing in my work: I wasn’t dealing with the intense colors and the brilliant light of these worlds, so different from the gray-brown reticence of my New England background. As a result, I started to photograph in color, and have done so ever since. This image from a smoky Grenada bar—whose vibrant red, green, and yellow are the colors of this Caribbean nation’s flag—helped show me the way. Ultimately this picture became the cover of my first book, Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds.” - Alex Webb
