In Persian imperial iconography, the hunt is a symbol of royal privilege and prowess, exemplified by the killing of a lion or, more impressively, by pinning the hoof and ear of an onanger with a single awwos, a feat for which the pre-Islamic Iranian king, Bahram-i Gur, was particularly famed; single sheets of drawings and paintings of this kind became increasingly popular from the late 16th century onwards; given the expense associated with the production of illustrated manuscripts and the decline in royal patronage for manuscripts in this period, many an artist turned to wealthy connoisseurs who would collect such single sheets in an album.
