Description: landscape with trees, farm buidings, cattle and two figures at a well
Label Text: Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Ellen Monroe, class of 2015:
This imaginary bucolic landscape is similar to many finished drawings that Campagnola made to be sold to wealthy patrons who toured Italy.
A much earlier drawing by the artist, Landscape with a Fortified Town and Rising Sun (left), can be seen in the Drawn to Excellence exhibition on SCMA’s first floor.
This farmyard scene is more complex than that of the town, but similarities can be seen in Campagnola’s treatment of the natural landscape and in his depiction of light and shadow.
Campagnola also created many etchings, and the impact of that medium is clear in his drawings where he used cross-hatching rather than a wash to render shade.
