Description:
Rectangular mahogany box with a hinged cover and dark burgundy, velvet-covered interior divided into four compartments - the two end compartments have sloped and stepped interior walls. We do not know what objects fitted here originally; however, we assume that the compartments held medical instruments since it is similar in form to medical instrument cases of the period. However, the two scarifiers (HD 55.66.2-.3) and two glass cupping cups (HD 55.66.4-.5) which came with the box when purchased by the Flynts, do not fit the interior compartments. The box has two brass hinges, two riveted brass straps extending from the front bottom of the box to the back edge, and a brass lock with a brass face plate; the key is missing. Two brass hooks extend up on the front to fit into eyes on the front of the lid.
