A comparison between PAJAMA photographs and French's paintings reveals that he often used photographs as studies for paintings. Untitled (Crouching Male Nude on the Beach) (AC 2012.287) is reminiscent of this sketch of a crouching man. What painting the photograph and sketch were in preparation for, if any, is unknown.
