Drypoint is one of the most sensitive printmaking techniques. Produced by scratching directly onto a metal plate with a sharp tool, drypoint’s characteristic effects of rich and velvet lines are reduced within a few printings. Kudryashov challenges this seeming frailty in his incessant exploration of the technique. In a series of constructions, such as this untitled work, he makes three original drypoints. He uses one as the base, then cuts, paints, and pastes the others, mounting them over the first to manipulate shapes. In doing so, he builds a piece that appears solid, strong, and monumental.
