Label Text:
Based on the actor's crest, he hails from the Ōtani line of actors, and is probably Ōtani Tokuji I, who held the name from 1770 unitl his death in 1807. He was also renowned for his dōkeyaku ("buffoon roles") performances. Monkeys, especially those that dance, and their trainers appear in many different kabuki plays. The play from which this portrait is taken has yet to be identified.
