Label Text: SKINNER LABEL: These daggers were especially used in duels, it being the practice at that time to hold them in the left hand, with the thumb above and the guard below, using them to ward off the adversary's blows, while attacking with the sword in the right hand.
SKINNER CATALOGUE: A 16th century style French main gauche (left hander). Straight, narrow, two edge blade, 16" x 7/16", screwing into a two prong ornamental heel, with hollow thumb indent. 12 1/4" straight cross hilt ending at each end in a spirally grooved enlargement. Wooden grip wound with fine braided steel wire, terminating in a flattened ball pommel. Solid triangular guard extending from the cross hilt to the pommel, with a gadroon edge and with a Gothic cross mounted in the center. Weight: 19 ozs. These dueling daggers were held in the left hand and used for warding off the enemy's blows. Cat. 10/14/1935.
