Label Text:
After emigrating to Paris in the 1920s, Kertész became part of the group of artists centered around the Montparnasse area of Paris. Among those in his circle was the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, known for his purely abstract paintings. For this photograph, Kertész manipulated the appearance of Mondrian's home to create a composition suggestive of the painter's geometric work. By adding the straw hat and opening the door to the stairwell, Kertész introduced curved lines that were lacking in both Mondrian's home and his paintings.
