Label Text:
In 1898, Grand Duke Georgii Aleksandrovich, the younger brother of Nicolas II, invited Nesterov to paint the interior of the Aleksandr Nevskii Church, which the Grand Duke had built in the Abastumani area of the Caucasus. Nesterov took advantage of this commission to get away from the World of Art, which he disliked at the time. He hoped to find in Abastumani “another ‘World,’ which is stronger, quieter and better suited for the creation of art.”

Nesterov worked over five years, making sketches wherever he was. These five drawings are most likely from a very early planning stage. It appears, however, that the artist realized variations of most of them by the time he completed the project in 1904. Under his signature on the sheet in the lower center, Nesterov noted the place: Abastumani.
