The couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009) are known internationally for their environmental interventions with fabric. They worked with landscapes, entire buildings, and interiors. Among their more recent projects is The Gates (2005) in New York’s Central Park.
This collage refers to the wrapping of the interior of the Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld, Germany. Architect Mies van der Rohe completed the house in 1930 as a private home with large picture windows and merging indoor and outdoor spaces. In 1971 Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the floors, staircases, and walkways with cotton fabric drop cloths and covered the windows with brown wrapping paper. It was their trademark to conceal—and at the same time expose—the essential aesthetic features of a structure.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude financed their work by selling preparatory drawings, collages, and models. This collage was created twelve years after the Krefeld project, most likely to support a new work.
