Description:
Hargreaves’ map of the Staffordshire Potteries is a very large (62 x 48 inches) map that is cut in sections and applied to linen. It is foldable, making it easier for transporting in a deep pocket or satchel. This map was much more detailed than previous maps, not only did it delineate public buildings and churches, but it also marked pottery factory sites with individual pottery ovens with circles. His map was the first trigonometrical survey of the county. Comparing the Hargreaves map to earlier maps by Yates and Thomas Allbut shows how much the North Staffordshire Potteries had expanded as a successful manufacturing district. There are not many publically available copies - examples reside in the Staffordshire Record Office, Keele University, and the British Library. The Potteries.
