Baum painted Pennsylvania coal mines during a period of professional crisis brought on by his profound disenchantment with what was then the predominant style, Abstract Expressionism. He discovered the region’s somber landscape by accident, when a miner assisted him with car trouble. The unyielding gray geometry of this industrial scenery not only inspired Baum to return to painting; it also lay the foundation for his later abstract work, composed of repeated shapes arrayed in (directionally and spiritually) uplifting patterns.
