Label Text:
This print is signed "Keisai Eisen ga" ('drawn by Keisai Eisen'). To the left of the signature is a seal reading "Izumi Ichi," representative of the publisher Izumiya Ichibei. The first half of the title of the series is printed in the blue cartouche at upper-right, with the remainder written at top-left.

The courtesan has blackened her teeth in accordance with Edo-period standards of female beauty. While the print is not explicitly titled, the maple leaves on the collar of the courtesan's kimono indicate that she is supposed to represent the poet Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), a perenially popular subject in Japanese art.
