The baseball rivalry between Waseda and Keio Universities is the oldest in Japan. The first game between the two schools was played in 1903, but after only three meetings, the series was canceled because of violent behavior between the schools’ supporters. The game was revived in 1925, to be played in series among the major universities in Tokyo. Jingū Stadium was constructed in 1926 in the outer precinct of Meiji Shrine. Because the stadium could not meet demand for seating for the Waseda/Keio game, it was renovated in 1931 to hold 58,000 people. Fukazawa commemorates the first meeting of the two schools in the new stadium.
