SKINNER LABEL: Chippendale Side Chair, Probably New York, The sturdy construction, the squared posts, half rounded above the seat, the simply decorative splat, and the end angled cyma curved top rail are pure early Chippendale. Middle 18th century.
SKINNER CATALOGUE: Chair. A very fine mid 18th century early American Chippendale splat back side chair, possibly of New York origin, in walnut and oak or ash. Top rail slightly bowed and rising at the ends; splat shaped by hand, with three long curved spreading piercings in the upper part; both characteristic of the Chippendale style. Back posts plain, squared below the seat, half rounded above, tenoned through the top rail. Front legs plain and squared. Single stretchers on all four sides, plain, squared, rounded on the top surface. Slip seat, with pine frame, covered with faded green velvet in a flowered design, not original. Height: back 36 1/4" seat 17" Square leg 1 5/8" Cat 8/20/1936
