SKINNER CATALOGUE: Chair. An exceptionally fine early 18th century "Northern" or New England slat back armchair. Maple posts and slats, hickory stretchers and arms. Four slats, with straight lower edge and curved top, tenoned into the posts, the top slat pegged. Back posts plain below the arms, ring turned between the slats, with spheroidal finials. Front posts ring turned and terminate in the mushroom knob. Two stretchers at front and sides and single at back are plain. Top front stretcher shows considerable wear at the left. Arm rests are shaped with a draw shave, taper at each end, and a tenon into both front and back posts. Twisted rush seat not original. This chair is typical of the best early 18th century New England style. Height: back 45 1/2" seat 18" Diam. posts 1 7/8" Cat. 8/20/1936.
