SKINNER CATALOGUE: An early (probably late 17th century) chest, with many characteristics to indicate Connecticut origin, although Mr. Skinner has it from a house in Enfield, Mass. Oak throughout. The 8 1/2 to 9 inch legs are continuous with the rectangular corner posts. Much worn moulding around the bottom. Straight front, with three panels molded in square cross design, with a beveled plaque set at an angle in the center. Panels of rift cut oak, plain, not carved. Four stiles ornamented with two half round turned balusters. Top front board decorated with two half oval dentils, now set horizontally, although originally they may have been at an angle. Two shallow (2 1/2 inch) drawers below the well, molded and with two turned oak handles. Two board lid, held by a beveled strip at each end, and opening into a well 49 5/8" x 19 7/8" x 20 1/4". Mortise and tenon construction into the corner posts, pegged. Lid hinges are interlocking wrought iron loops. Lock missing. Key plate is a round embossed brass escutcheon, affixed with three tiny wrought iron nails.
In excellent condition, waxed on the natural oak wood. Overall length 54" width 22 3/8" height 35" Cat. 10/31/1936
