SKINNER CATALOGUE: Wardrobe Cupboard. An old, mid 18th century, Pennsylvania wardrobe cupboard, in a soft fine grained wood. Four 3 7/8 inch diameter ball feet. Base, dovetail construction, with heavy pegged molding at the bottom and lighter molding at the top. Contains two drawers, dovetail construction, with two brass escutcheon handles and brass escutcheon keyhole lock. Two board top dovetail and pegged construction, with extra heavy 3 1/4 inch molding at the top, light molding at bottom. Both the base and the top are grooved, the front, ends, and back fitting into the grooves and being held together and in place by the top and base. Ends triple paneled, divided horizontally, two doors the same, with single long vertical panels each side of the doors and a simple triple groove decoaration between. Two hand wrought brass curved staple and strap hinges on each door. Brass handle on left door, connecting with a turn plate; missing on the right door. Both doors have brass keyhole escutcheons, apparently later additions, as there is no key hole in the left door, while the right has an iron spring lock and key. Right compartment has two shelves and runners for a third. Left has four turned wooden clothes knobs. This is one of the especially fine pieces in the museum. One very similar to it is illustrated in Nutting's "Furniture Treasury", vol. 1, plate 579. Cat. 1/11/1937
