Numerous Roman burials were found near the New Kingdom temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut (ruled 1473–1458 B.C.E.), which in Roman times served as a sanctuary to the Greek god of healing, Asklepios. Burial near this sacred site was considered to be auspicious.
