Description:
This small argillite carving depicts a story adopted by the Haida from their Tsimshian neighbors. To the left and the right, two grizzly bears are shown grabbing a woman. The woman, who was out picking berries, was kidnapped by bears and was eventually forced to marry a bear. She bore children who resembled bear-humans. Other pieces of Haida art retell this story, often showing the woman giving birth to her bear children. AP2018
