Label Text:
Joris Hoefnagel’s prints, drawings, and watercolors of carefully composed flora and fauna played an important role in the development of still-life painting in northern Europe. In 1592, Hoefnagel’s son and fellow artist, Jacob, published a series of 52 engravings entitled Archetypa studiaque after his father’s sketches of plants, insects, reptiles, and other small creatures. Collectively, the prints provided a sourcebook for artists working in an emerging genre—one which transformed the private market for paintings in the 17th century.
