Description:
Handbound booklet with floral crewelwork patterns in ink and watercolors in red, blue, yellow, purple, orange and light green; genealogical information for the Fisher Family of Dedham, New Braintree and Northampton, Massachusetts; and Psalm 127, "A Wedding Hymn" and "A Marriage Hymn." The front page is inscribed: "Jonathan Fisher jun [or junr] / This Book 1767./ Katharine Fisher / Her Writing Drawing/ and painting./ New Braintree March 19.1767 / Jonathan Fisher Removed/ From Dedham to New Braintree / in may 1765 / Katharine Fisher Removed / From Dedham to New Braintree / November.y. 8.1766 / Removed to Northampton / June.1.1773." The daughter of William Avery (1716-1796) and Bethiah Metcalf Avery (1715-1793) of Dedham, Katherine Avery (b.1746) married Jonathan Fisher, Jr. (1743-1777), the son of Jonathan Fisher (1713-1796) of Dedham, in 1766. Four pages in the rear of the book list their birth and marriage dates, and the birth and baptism dates of their seven children. The final entries are for the death of her husband, "Departed this Life march 10.1777 at / Morris Town in New Jersey, aged 33 years 3 months 4 days", and her moving to Sunderland on May 24, 1777 and then Dedham on January 16, 1778 - the last entry. Katharine and Jonathan Junior's son, also named Jonathan, would go on to publish a 350-page work in 1834 entitled Scripture Animals, illustrating all creatures referenced in the Bible. Katharine was experienced in the textile arts; in addition to her crewelwork embroidery illustrations in this booklet, she also wove (and possibly knitted) cloth, including check shirting, linen, jersey and carpeting.
