Sawa Sekkyo was a pupil of Tsutsumi Tōrin, a painter of lanterns and ema plaques. Sekkyō was not prolific, producing landscapes, especially uki-e, including an untitled set of views of Edo, publishing in the late 1810s (Example: AC 2005.185). In addition, he also produced monochromatic kachō-ga, usually in black or blue ink, formats known as sumizuri-e and aizuri-e, respectively. This print is signed "Sekkyō ga" and bears no other markings. - BB, 2013
