Label Text:
Painter, stained glass designer, and Japanese print critic, La Farge prepared this painting for his admission to the Lotos Club, a New York literary and arts association dubbed by Samuel Clemens (who became a member the following year) "the Ace of Clubs." The artist later adapted the design for the frontispiece to a volume of club writings, Lotos Leaves (1875.)
