Description: Percussion cap muzzle loading rifle with 28 1/2" octagonal barrel, 3/8" bore. Hammer on under side of gun, brass cap cup. Mahogany stock coming to the barrel only, round patch box on right side containing cloth wads. Elevation rear sight 2" back of trigger, elevation center sight, set forward sight. Marked on barrel: H.B. HARRINGTON LEBANON NH 1854. 36 marked twice on rear sight. Weight: 8 1/4 lbs Complete and in good condition. Given to Dr. H.O. Hastings of Holyoke when he was a boy in payment for cutting 17 cords of wood and bought from him by Mr. Skinner. This type of gun appears to have been developed by D.H. Hilliard, a gunmaker who worked for a third of a century in Cornish, N.H. These guns were very simple and cheap and were sold in large quantities in New England and eastern New York.
