SKINNER CATALOGUE: Sharp's Civil War .52 caliber percussion breech-loading carbine, with pellet primer magazine. Each time the hammer is cocked, a primed copper pellet is forced by the feed spring out of the magazine into position at the nipple ready for exploding by the descending blow of the hammer, thus firing the charge. Slide and ring on left side for sling. Invented by Christian Sharp in 1848 and manufactured by the Sharp's Rifle Manufacturing Company, which operated in Hartford, CT, 1851-1875, and in Bridgeport, 1875-1881. Used by the United States cavalry, 1855-1900. Marked: "48773 [Serial No.] PAT 1848 R.S. LAWRENCE APRIL 12th 1859 C. SHARPS PAT OCT 5th 1852" and on the sight elevator "R.S. LAWRENCE PATENTED FEB 15th 1859". Weight: 7 lbs, 4 ozs Length of barrel: 22" Presented by Mr. B.C. Read. Cat. 1/27/1935.
