Label Text:
The inscription of publisher, Mastuno Yonejirō, a publisher of Russo-Japanese War prints (see Merritt, Helen, and Nanako Yamada, "Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints," University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu(1992): 218.) is printed vertically descending on the left margin and dates this impression June 29, 1895.This is a children's print showing brave Japanese cats vanquishing a Chinese mice navy. The title of the print contains a pun: "Nishin," as written with the characters "ni," to resemble," and "shin," meaning "truth," are homonyms with the term for the first Sino-Japanese war, or "Nishin sensō"; thus the title could be translated "A Picture of the Sino-Japanese Naval Battle of the Cats and Mice." - BB, 2014
