Not the first artistic reinterpretation of Francisco Goya’s famous social satire portfolio Los Caprichos, Lombardo turned to a feminist and queer vernacular to contemporize her critique of society’s follies, prejudice, and ignorance. Nobody Knows Themself becomes Lombardo’s sharply etched statement about control over women’s bodies and societal pressures with an image based on Miley Cyrus’ provocative performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013. Describing the scene, Lombardo writes: “The world is a spectacle. Face, dress and voice are contrived. All sit in judgment, unable to break their stare, using morality to deceive until the self is no more.”
