Liebling, internationally renowned photographer, filmmaker, and teacher, influenced several generations of socially conscious photographers. In 1947 Liebling joined the Photo League, a cooperative of socially concerned photographers that included Paul Strand (1890–1976), who became his mentor.
The U.S. government declared the Photo League a subversive organization in the very year that Liebling joined, and many of its members were blacklisted for supposedly being communist sympathizers. Liebling travelled throughout America, filming and photographing whatever caught his eye: coalminers, street scenes, migrant workers, and ordinary farmers, as exemplified by Woman Planting. He once said of his work: “My sympathies have always been with everyday people. They are the center of my photography.”
