Roerich, was a gifted landscape painter. This painting is one of a series of stage designs for the play “Peer Gynt” (1867) by Henrik Ibsen, performed at The Moscow Art Theatre in 1912. The imaginary landscape with its vivid colors creates a fantasy backdrop for the romantic drama taking place in the barren mountains of Norway. The head of the theater, Konstantin Stanislavskii, however, feared that Rerikh’s design overshadowed the performance and subsequently stopped hiring artists to create the sets.
