Although it rises to a height of only twenty-five meters, Atagoyama was the tallest point in the eastern part of the city. The shrine at the top was an important meisho, often illustrated by Hiroshige. In this print, Kiyochika ignores the religious structures and chooses instead to focus on the tea shop situated nearby. A kimono-clad woman waits on a man fashionably dressed in Western clothes, in a scene that draws attention to changes occurring in the Meiji-era city.
