Label Text:
Milton crafts an image of nonlinear time in this blending of disparate styles and eras. He shapes this scene with distinct source materials, including the interior of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, built between 1675–1710, and the ceiling of the nineteenth-century shopping mall Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, Italy. Milton inserts an altered archival image of the film crew from The Scarlet Letter (1926) in the foreground, to the right of author James Joyce having a conversation with his younger self. Milton’s print is a visual analog to Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness literary technique, creating new timelines through associative leaps and consolidated moments.
