Excerpt from wall label, for the exhibition “The Unexpected Encounters of Looking Again,” November 28 - March 15, 2007:
Larry Clark is widely regarded as one of the most influential American photographers and filmmakers of youth culture since the 1970s. Such films as Kids (1995) and Wassup Rockers (2005) address issues of teen sexuality, violence, and drug use. Untitled from 42nd Street is included in his book Teenage Lust: “An Autobiography of Larry Clark.” This book includes photographs of Clark and his family laid out in a chronological order. Untitled from 42nd Street is from the third section of Clark’s book which focuses on young male hustlers in the Times Square area of New York City around 1970. The subject matter of this photograph is set up to be looked at, yet it is startling and unsettling as the young man in this photograph stares back directly. This image challenges the assumption that the object to be looked at is passive as the young man in the photograph stares directly back at the viewer. - Rebecca Karp (M.A. '08)
