Label Text:
Chikanobu’s Chiyoda Palace series sought to re-create the splendors of traditional court life at a time of rapid change and modernization in Japan. By inserting himself playfully into the original scene — a lady operating crank-handle fan apparatus — Kim links the contemporary artifice of the “selfie” with Chikanobu’s self-conscious depiction of the past, highlighting the constructed nature of both images. Surrounded with inexpensive Asian objects, the likes of which one might purchase in an urban Chinatown, he also playfully references the history of Japanese prints as popular and decorative commodities, which were considered “high art” only after their export to the West.
