Label Text:
The first commercial establishment for social dancing opened in Yokohama in 1920. By 1930, dancing and the jazz that accompanied it had become so popular that Onchi included an image of a dance hall in his contribution to One Hundred Views of New Tokyo. The atmosphere in the dance halls was frequently sexually charged, and Onchi captures that mood, showing how the men and women clutch at one another in the dark interior as they move around the floor.
