Mothers kept small stone amulets to protect their infants from evil demons, such as Lamashtu and Pazuzu. Amulets like this one depicting a winged monster are known from several regions of the ancient Near East. Amherst missionary Henry Van Lennep may have acquired this fragmentary example on his travels in eastern Asia Minor.
