SKINNER CATALOGUE: "Bone China" plate. Gilt edging and orange flowered design. Marked in cursive letters: Spode's Imperial.
"Bone China," a special compound of china clay, china stone, and calcined bones, was invented by Josian Spode II about 1805, is beautifully white, and even today is used by the best porcelain manufacturers. In 1833 William Copeland purchased the concern from Spode's executors, and in 1843 the firm became Copeland & Garrett.
